Five Star is the legendary rap group that has been credited for leading and pioneering the Glory Years of Nine Music. The group consisted of Terra Cassanova, Naf Tar, Killer Cass, Dante, and Nine Taurus. The release of their debut album influenced a whole music scene to commence centred around them and Nine Music.

History

Five Star began when Nine Taurus convinced his close friend Terra Cassanova to start a rap group and join Nine Music, Nine Taurus’ new record label (then Nine Foundation). Terra and Nine then rounded up there close friends Naf Tar, Killer Cass and Dante. They called themselves Five Star because of their popularity in there area (the Five Stars).

Five Star started of rapping on street corners and creating Street Ciphers. They quickly began recording there debut album titled ‘Five Star’. Before the album was released it was eagerly anticipated because of the volume of street ciphers they attended and created. Because of this they were accepted to perform many PAs and talent shows.

The Five Star album was received with critical acclaim. It sold just over 100 cassette tapes but it is rumoured to have been bootlegged to thousands. All production from the album was from Nine Taurus and the whole album was recorded at Terra’s Flat in one afternoon. The album only had 2 guest features, Red Eye and Hera, who many saw as the honorary 6th Star. This album was so popular that at one incident Five Star upstaged an entire Talent Show by performing their own show outside the event on the street. They did this because the promoter would not let them perform at the event.

After the release of their album Five Star featured on many Nine Music projects. All apart from Naf Tar released solo projects. There was talk of a second album up until the summer 1998 at the beginning of the Nine Music Crash.

Legacy

Five Star created a level of glamour and hype that was the Glory Years. Technical sound quality and the need of budget was not even considered in there activities. Good music and good talent was the only thing that mattered, and Five Star brought that to a large audience and ridiculed all that opposed.

Because of the relaxed and frivolous attitude of the group (and a lot of Nine Music artists at this time), a copy of the Five Star album has not been recovered. This has created a mystic and vivid account of the album.

The concept of Tri Gen is build on the concept of the Glory Years and the glamour of Five Star.
